When purchased, the main bushing was too tight to remove. It is my first palm nailer, and I learned how to use it pretty well by driving a couple dozen 12d nails. Porter-Cable told me where to take it for fix. The repair facility fixed it while I waited. It is important to adjust compressor to have enough pressure to drive nail completely without so much pressure that the palm nailer is unnecessarily over-powered. I'm happy with it, and would buy it again if I had to make the decision all over again.KenB
They had the tip off in a couple minutes. When i got it home i found the torching demagnetized the tip so went back to the porter cable store and asked the to order me a new magnet (the magnet is size of small pill held in by clip on the end of the tip). The 16 penny nail just fit in the tip, a 16 penny galvanized nail's head is to large to fit in the standard tip.I then went to change tips to drive finish nails and i could not get the tip off. In order to fix it they needed to 'torch' it. I like that you can change the pressure to the job at hand.
I have tried hitting it with a 3 pound hammer in the past but only bent it back half way or so, I was able to use the hammer on the bend and push on the leading edge and it flattened it nicely. Set to 30 psi. I called porter cable and they said i could return it or bring it to their factory store and they could fix it. It sill would not budge, I even hit the wrench with a hammer, nothing. It easily sank the largest nail had in the basement which was a 16 penny nail.
The nailer does not come with enough spacing washers to keep the nail proud of the surface. I ordered some more spacing washers, they are not here yet, 5 dollars each for washers (sigh). I like to stop before the nail goes all the way in and finish with a nail punch. I chose the latter (the store is 15 minutes away and my wife able to go there during their poor hours). They did, couple days later went to pick it up and they had ordered a whole new tip, which fine.
Now have an extra tip. The nailer works well, When I got it i tested a bunch of nails through some 2x4's. I have used the hammer attachment to fix my snow thrower. The cowling was bent and making it hard to use.
I was then able to finish with the 3 pound hammer to make it look like new again. I have also used to as a hammer to chisel wood. I dont like that you cant adjust to leave the nail proud with out buying some extra super expensive washers.
I could not get much leverage holding the thing in my hand so i built a wooden box only slightly wider than the nailer and put it in there to get some good leverage. Also dont like that it came with the tip siezed on. It was free of charge of course, i peaked at the invoice and saw it would have cost me 25 dollars if i had to pay for it.
Since then it has worked fine, I have used it for mostly finish nails, some 2.5 inches (60 psi) and even some tiny 7/8th inch ones (use 30 psi). I plan to try it as hammer to split wood when it gets warmer outside.I like the size of the thing. But it has been a very useful tool so far.
This little tool allows me to do jobs I'd never thought of doing in the past. Purchased this five years ago originally to use in spaces where a nail gun wouldn't fit but like it so well that have continued to use in many other capcities. It's safer than a nail gun (although my better half insists the danger with a nail gun is stupidity rather than actual risk.why chance it though)., fits almost everwhere and makes short work of all kinds of nails both large and small. Spouse ended up liking it so well that we had to get two since I won't share. Great tool that has stood the test of time.
I ordered this and thought it might not be the best because I wanted a deal. It's also easier than trying to hammer in a small space and you don't have to worry about bent nails. I found it easy to use, just pushing slightly down on a nail drives it like butter. I built four wood gates using it the first weekend I had it in no time, only takes one or two nails to get used to. I recommend this product to a novice or expert carpender. Just be careful when the nail is almost completely in don't push too hard or you will leave a mark in the wood, finish with a nail set.
There is a nice glove with the unit which improves control and reduces fatigue. I had to be careful as i didn't want to damage the nailer, thankfully no damage was done.
It has a bullet proof case with compartmentalized storage for all the accessories. I don't use this nailer often but at times it's the only tool for the job, especially when space is at a premium.
This is a great little nailer, plenty of power for driving even the largest of nails. The magnetic tips in the driver heads are very weak and the first time i tried to change the head assembly i had to secure the nailer in a vise to get it off with one of the supplied spanners and a vice grips.
I've driven mostly two inch, three and a half inch and four inch nails with this nailer but i think where it really comes into it's own is when driving five, six and seven inch nails all Day long. I bought and fitted a swivelling air adaptor and it reduced hose drag and improved manouverability, especially up a ladder or on a roof. There are three removable rings which are used to set the dept of drive, i removed all three and the nails are set flush.
I noticed at least one other reviewer had this problem as well. Apart from an over tightened driver head and the weak magnitized tips this is a superb tool and i would highly reccomend it to anyone.
